How do i tell if my Betta fish is a boy or a girl?

i have a betta and i named it Flower thinking it's a girl. and now i want to know if it's a boy or girl!? Help!
Answers:
Typically if it is betta splendens (the regular betta you get in a store) the males have long, flowing fins http://www.cacentre.com/avatar/02betta.j... and the females do not http://www.flippersandfins.net/images/be...
check between the back legs
i actually dont think you can
Males have the plumage. Females do not.
the males are the ones with all the fancy fins. It is probably a male b/c the females look mostly like regular fish!! You dont see many of them.
If it is colorful it is a boy. Most in pet stores are males. The females are plain and don't have as long of tails.
Male betta fish have the long fins and are often really bright colors. They're usually the type to be sold in pet stores. Female betta fish are more dull in color and have short stubby fins.
like the bird kingdom - the Male species are the most pretty - an example would be like the Peacock, the robyn - The Males Betta's are the most vibrant in colours and have the longest fins and decoration - just beautiful -
Males are also larger than the females, and are more agressive, so that you can only have one in a tank unless you use a 'betta barracks' to keep them separated. Females are not agressive, so you have can several in a tank without problems.
Does the fish have a huge, colorful tail? If it does, then it is a male. Usually, stores just sell male bettas because the females are used for breeding.

Hope this answers your question,
Miche

It's really, really easy. This is a male:

and this is a female:

See the difference in the fins? That's all there is too it, males have larger and longer fins

The boy Beta is very pretty all blues %26 purple. The females are kind of ugly goldish looking and whatever you do don't put two boys together or they will kill each otherl I have a boy Beta his name is Bud! so every morning I feed him and say whad up Bud!!!
if the betta has a really long nice tail fin...then it is a boy..
a girl betta has a very short tail fin.. good luck!!
Boys have longer fins with more beautiful colors.

Females have very short fins and have less beautiful colors like shades of brown.
does it have long fins? Females tend to have shorter, less majestic fins, while males have big beautiful ones.

Hopefully this helps!
Also you can ask someone at the pet store you got it at.
Males have longer fins than the females. their color doesn't matter at all it's all in the fins. Females have very very short fins compared to the males
If you have two to compare with, it'll be easy to see because males usually have longer and more showy fins.

However, with the competition quality bettas we have today, some females are developing such long fins, they almost look like juvenile males.

The other thing you can do is to look under the fish's stomach. If you see a tiny while spot that looks like a single egg, that's a female and it shows that she is ready to mate. Males don't have that.

Males also tend to develop the habit of building bubble nests. So if you see your fish doing this, it's definitely a male.

Most bettas sold in the fish stores are male anyway so it is unlikely you ended up with a female. Females (except very high quality ones) tend to all be crowded into a tank. They scuffle but do not fight to the death like males.

If your fish was on its own in a little bowl at the petstore when you got him, then he's most probably a male too.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
