How do you get rid of "Velvet" in your saltwater aquarium? I have 55gal, sand substrate, live rock.

All levels good; nitrite 0, ammonia 0, ph 8.2, nitrate 20-40 ppm. I use premixed Ocean Seawater. Have gone fallow for 8 weeks, velvet still present.
Answers:
I'd have to ask what you've been using to treat this so far, but whatever it is obviously hasn't been very sucessful for you. Also, are you positive of your diagnosis? Marine velvet symptoms and those of a few other conditions can appear similar.

There are a number of methods that are proven to treat marine parasites, among these are freshwater dips (won't rid your tank of the parasites, only the fish undergoing treatment), copper, and formalin. The copper and formalin, especially when used in combination, provide the most effective treatment, but these will have negative effects on any invertebrates you may keep and does stress the fish. You can treat the fish outside the tank (using a "hospital tank") to protect any inverts, but unlike ich, the parasite causing velvet can remain for quite some time without a fish host. Formalin is also a known carcinogenic, so you need to be careful when handling this. I'll include some links to marine velvet and it's treatment below:

http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-0... - marine velvet biology and treatment
http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/body_vm004... - link on marine velvet

If you are using a copper based treatment already, are you testing the amount of copper present in the water? Copper has the unfortunate tendency to bind with organics (you should always do a water change and gravel cleaning prior to its use), so you may not be getting an effective dose. You also need to pull any carbon from your filters as this will remove medications.

I've never tried Kick-Ich personally, but from information on this product (which is provided by the manufacturing company), it doesn't claim any benefit for treatment of any other marine diseases other than ich. Nor have I found independent research supporting the effectiveness of the product other than the manufacturer's claims. Information I've found on the web, from a website with a panel headed by a marine scientist and author, doesn't support the product even as an ich treatment, rather it lists this as a "non-cure":

http://www.wetwebmedia.com/cryptnoncures...
Are you referring to red algae?
Oodinium ich is easy to treat with KickIch. ONLY. This also will not hurt your inverts corals or anything else in your tank.

8 weeks is a long time to have velvet. kick ich will take about 12 days to cure totally.

If you need more help feel free to email me.

How do you get clown loaches to grow really fast???

In my fish tank I lost four loaches that were getting pretty big and now have to start over. Does anyone know how to get them to grow really fast?? I want some big ones!!!
Answers:
clown loaches are a slow growing fish but there is one thing to help just feed it good and keep the water clean and cycled and the best thing to feed is brine shrimp that will make them grow the fastest you can buy frozen or raise your own just search on yahoo for raising brine shrimp and it will give you all the info you need it is a very easy thing to do but like i said it is just as easy to buy frozen but not as nutritious
Basically you don't. Clown loaches are a slow growing species and will only grow at a certain speed no matter what you try. The best think to do is go for healthy growth by keeping the tank clean and feeding a nice variety of foods.

MM
They grow at their own rate. Unless you keep one of them in a really big tank, then he'll grow to adapt to the tank size.
Keep the water clean, change 25% every alternative day, maintain temperature at 27 degree C, and feed with frozen or live blood worms. Their growth rate will increase.

How do you fish. I have a lake across from my house but don't know how to fish.?

Answers:
You need a rod and reel and some bait. If you're fishing for catfish, raw chicken liver is the best bait there is. If it's bass, you need a plastic worm or a lure from the sporting goods store. The clerk can help you. For cats, just throw in the baited line and let it sit till you get a bite. For bass, you have to simulate live food for it to hit. Practice makes perfect. Fishing is a great pasttime. Enjoy!

Take a friend along who knows how and let them show you the ropes! Also, watch those fishing shows on tv on Saturday mornings.
Check out the sporting goods dept in your neighborhood mega-store.
Ask a neighbor to take you and show you how. But first make sure you don't need a license for that particular lake.
This section is for aquarium keeping. You will probably get far better answers by posting your question in Outdoor Recreation or Water sports sections. Best of luck, fishing is fun!

MM
What kind of fishing? Fly fishing, bottom fishing, bait fishing, spear fishing, bow fishing, lure fishing or how about trolling. What kind of fishing rod and reel?
You buy a fishing pole and use the directions. Be sure you have a liscence to fish, also.
There are many types of fishing and this is the fish caretaking section, try sports and recreation
Best of luck!!!
You won't get fish for your aquarium from fishing in a lake. Go to a pet store. If you are going fishing for food or sport, look up in your yellow pages under fishing or game and wildlife in the government section.

How do you feed fish while on vacation.?

In July, we will be going on a 2 week vacation. We have a 20 gallon aquarium with 4 fish in it. I need some info on how to feed them while we are away.

Quick answers gets you the points

Thanks in advance
Answers:
There are fish feeders that runs like a clock and can feed the fish twice a day, all you have to do is fill the cylinder with fish food flakes and attach it to the tank, if patience you could watch the thing for five minutes while it drops the food in the tank. I was gone for three weeks and my fish was fine when I return. They are about 25 dollars at petsmart, I found the same thing for half the price at Wal mart. The other thing is feeding blocks that you drop into a tank that releases food slowly, but there is no guarantee that the fish may try to pick on these and eat them more quickly, but having only four fishes it should not be a problem with the time release feeder. Last you can use a time release and ask a friend to look after your fishes from time to time, but I like the fish feeder clock cause I know that it works and even when I don't have time to feed the fish it is done automatically.
They actually make little shell or stone-shaped things that you drop in the tank which slowly dissolve and release food - check pet stores or even pet dept at Wal-Mart.
There are vacation food blocks available for fish at your local PetsMart or PetCo. Be sure to read the labels carefully, as different brands last for different amounts of time.

You could also look into purchasing an automatic feeder. though they are a lot more expensive.
You could ask a nieghbor or a relative that lives close by that you trust. They could go to your house everyday to feed them. They can also bring in your mail and the paper.
in pet shops you can buy this things which can last for long and your fish will pick at them they are good
Friends or neighbors. Ask somebody else to feed the fish. Or if you can't, there's some long term food fish stuff that you can buy. It desolves slowly, some last for weeks, some last for days. But I suggest having somebody come by to feed them.
you can ask a family member to go over like every other day and feed them.
They make vacation feeders, I've seen up to 10 day ones.
The problem with them though, is that any picky eaters in your tank will shun the pellet food and starve.
Happened to my Violet Goby.

Automatic feeders are sold at most pet stores, they tend to run around $10 at Walmart.
You can give it to a neighbor to feed. You can buy an automatic feeder (not the ones that dissolve, the ones that are electronic). Or you can not go on the vacation (which will suck)
They make vacation feeders you put them in the tank well you are away, couldn't be easier.
Well at some pet stores they have these bars that let out food slowly.

They all last for different times. Ex-1 week 2 weeks 5 days.

If you can't find these i would try to find someone you trust to give a spare key and give them the right to go in your house without you there to feed your wet little friends.

Hope you have fun with on your trip!!
Vacation feeders...aptly named (on the package) blocks of basic food that will release slowly over time (timed-release) and insure that the food supply will last for a week.

There is also a small device available in petshops called an auto-feeder...designed for this type of need.

It's a small plastic device that mounts atop the tank, and uses a motor and batteries.

A hopper holds up to 2 weeks of food, and it actually dumps the measured amount of food into the tank each day.

For a 2-week stay, this would work better than the blocks.
Hire some one to feed them.
As others have said there are vacation feeders that take a while to dissolve or even electronic feeders. Their are neighbors as well if you trust them or even family members if they live close or aren't going with you on vacation. There is even a pet sitter service if you trust that for people who have dogs, cats, birds etc. I am sure even fish. I hope that all goes well and have a good vacation.
ask of hire a neighbor or friend

How do you do your replacement water for tropical freshwater?

I used to go to my aquarium store down the street and fill up my 2 five gallon jugs, then I would add 1 tbs of salt and and the required Novaqua (I use that as my "Stress Coat", anything better?). But now that it has closed down (I'm sad) I fill the jugs with my home drinking water tap (the Novaqua serves as a water conditioner) and still add salt and Nov. I would go to my other pet store but it's all the way on the other side of town. Do some people add the required salt to their aquarium directly after a water change?

Responses?
Answers:
Waste of money if you have to buy fish water for your tank, tap water is just fine.

I always dissolve my salt in a small amount of water before I add it to the tank.
For fresh water, I use the regular house water. I only change about 20% at a time. I use a product called EasyBalance to remove chlorine. After the new water is in, I add some salt and stree coat to the tank directly. I used to have a salt water tank and to top off you use FRESH water, for that I used to buy gallons at the local supermarket. Look around for water filtrated via reverse osmosis. I would pay about $1/gal.
I dont think you really need the salt because it doenst really do anything as far as I know. I would just use the NovAqua for water conditioning.
use the tap water with the other additives.2 five gallon jugs...if you have a 10 gallon tank, don't change ALL the water in the tank at once..just do 10 to 20 percent at a time

How do you distinguish between male and female crayfish?

We have a crawdad that my daughter caught in a local pond, we have had it for almost a year now and would like to breed and have more. can anyone help? it is just a common wild crayfish so i dont know the exact name. we could use all the help we can get.
Answers:
It can get pretty technical, but it can be done. First, you'll have to turn it over and hold it (or put it in a clear bottomed container and look underneath). The best photos I can find have captions in a foreign language, but I can try and explain what these are showing: http://www.crayfishworld.com/sexy.htm...

Crayfish have four pairs of legs, numbered 1 (closest to head) through 4 (closest to tail). In the photos in the link, the head is always to the left. One of the easiest features to see is the swimmerettes - these appendages look like little gills and are paired on the segments behind the last pair of legs. In females, the first pair is small or missing - in the males, they are well-developed. The swimmerettes can be seen in the second and third paired photos.

A little more difficult to see, but there are differences in the position of the pores that are the genital openings - where sperm or eggs are deposited - these are shown in the top pair of photos. In the males, the pores are at the base of the fourth pair of legs. The female has oviduct openings at the base of the second pair of legs.
i think that male crayfish are bigger than the females. does that help? sorry:(
How did you ever manage to keep a crayfish alive anyhow? I have never ben able to do so although nearly everything else I kept did very well in captivity. Did you know a female crayfish carries her eggs underneath her tail?

How do you de-salinify an aquarium?

Bringing water into where i've got the tank would be a hassle, and the nearest water source is just a little bit salty...any way i can de-salt the water?
Answers:
If it was me i'ld take a sample of the water to my local pet store. Usually if u are buying fish and supplies there they are willing to help. Get the manager or someone who knows fish best. Tablets can be purchased to adjust your water. Get their advice depending on results of the water. Call around first if u feel better and see who can accomondate u best. Also the kind of fish most likely to thrive for u not die. Always save the bodies if they pass and bring them back... again they will test your water. The circle of fish life! Enjoy.
* filter! brilliant also will help
use R.O filter
Water exchanges work quickest. Wait 15 minutes after you swap and test the water.
Reverse Osmosis is the only way to achieve this and it is extremely expensive. The problem there is that along with whatever salt content the water has - it's also going to remove all of the trace elements from the water (so you will have to condition the water with new trace elements afterwards or the fish will not fair well for long).

How do you clean really murky pond water?

I have a pond that is so murky that you can barely even see the fish. Any advise on what how I should clean it?
Answers:
It really depends on WHY your pond is murky. Murky water in a pond doesn't mean it's bad, anymore than clear water means it's good (think chlorine!). Have you tested the water? Ammonia or nitrite could be clouding the water and is toxic to fish.
If you have a new filtration system on your pond, it may not have built up that "slime" inside that removes particles. In that case, time will clear up your murkiness.
Or..the murkiness could be an algae bloom if you don't have a UVc installed or your UVc is not large enough for your pond size.
If your water chemistry is satisfactory, and the algae is not the cause then the solution to improving your water clarity is to enhance your filtration and particularly mechanical filtration.

The most common, limiting factor of a filter is its ability to remove the finer suspended solids. A filter is likely to be tested to its limits when fish are feeding actively in the summer. This is why ponds are at their clearest in the winter. If your filter is unable to remove even the smallest of solids then you will never be able to achieve crystal clear water.
Get rid of the pond then you won't have any problems.
Use Murk remover...
depending on the size of the pond, you may have to get a pump attached to a filter, sought of like a awimming pool pump and filter.
get an outside filter, or drain the pond and then clean it out.
but if you do that, make sure the water you put back in is the same PH as the water that was there to begin with, or youll kill the fish.
.
First thing you might want to look at is - why is it murky? was it just built or has it been there for a while. freshly built ponds will take some time to clear up. some ponds will stay muddy looking forever depending on what type of soil they are in. as a water treatment plant operator, we use a polymer to treat the water and make the dirt cling together and fall out. but it would be pretty hard to get pond water mixed well enough for something like that to work. good luck

How do you clean aquarium sand when you are cleaning the tank?

I cant use my siphon gravel cleaner because is sucks up the sand.
Answers:
You can use the siphon once you get the proper technique. Bend the tubing a little with one had so it reduces the flow of the water. How much you'll have to crimp it will be determined on the size of the siphon and distance between the end and the sand. It takes a little while to get the hange of doing it this way, but it works!

Sand is actually easier to keep clean because all the gunk sits on the top. And many burrowing fishes will do better having sand than heavier gravel.
My first question is why are you using sand? Sand will not allow the water to flow into a filter system. If your using sand get rid of it and replce it with a small gravel. I think you will find that the water quality will be much better and you wont lose as many fish.
Can't top that first answer. But if you meant gravel, all you need do is run some fresh water in it and swish it around real good with your hands. Drain and do it twice more. The gravel rubbing against itself will give it a good cleaning. If the poo and such in the water offends you, use some surgical gloves (available at any store these days).
You remove the fish and about 2/3 of the water. then you put your hand into the sand and sift it all around. Then you take the dirty water and replace it with new water.
to answer the first guys question some times you need to use sand i have a shark and there under side is easly cut and they get infections any die i have heard of other reef fish that like sand better so it depends on the fishes needs not always what you want to put in the bottom
Why would you use sand for a freshwater aquarium. I would empty out the whole tank.

How do you change a fresh water fish tank?

Answers:
Here are a few steps for cleaning:

* Unplug your heater so that it will not crack if the water level drops more than 1/3 of the way down the heater. This is best done 20 minutes before you begin changing water. Make sure and plug the heater back in after adding water

*Make sure and wipe down the sides of the aquarium with an aquarium scrubber that is used ONLY for the aquarium to avoid contamination. Try and remove unsightly algae and especially any slime or mold (rinse this off in a sink)

*Use this time to change filter media that NEEDS changing, do NOT go overboard and change all media or you risk destroying your aquarium鈥檚 bacterial colonies needed for removal of ammonia, nitrites, ECT. HOB filters should have a second filter cartridge either in the filter or in the water column of the aquarium to allow for bacteria to form on this new cartridge before replacing the old one. If your HOB Filter has a sponge, bio grid (such as a VitaLife HOB filter , or bio wheel; you only need to rinse these off in de-chlorinated tap or used tank water and there is no need to prepare a second cartridge before changing the old one.

*At this point you should change your water using a gravel vacuum, siphon, or similar method.

For much more including different methods and reasons for water changes, I recommend reading this article:
http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/...
I do not believe that your question is clear!

what exactly are you asking?
it's not so hard cleaning the tank, you only need to provide it with filters and the water'll definitely be clear. once a month you should clean the filter sponge and change 1/3 of the water, by using syphon or even bucket, just don't stress the fishies...
good luck

How do you caculate the gallon capacity of a fish tank?

I have a fish tank and stand in the basement. The measurements are 4 feet long by 1 feet 4 inches wide by 1 feet 8 inches high.
Answers:
so u got 48x16x20 inches, this comes out to 15360 cubic inches. when converted to gallons, done easily by typing 15360 cubic inches to gallons in google, you get 66.5 gallons

15 360 (cubic inches) = 66.4935062 US gallons

beats the hell out of measuring with a bucket.
Try maybe, filling it up with water one gallon at a time, counting them as you put them in, until full....there's your answer, and no I'm not trying to be a smarty***!
I'm betting that is a 75 gallon tank. Mine is 48x18x20, and yours is almost about that. Possibly 70?
There's a mathematical way to do but Im to hungover to figure that out right now. So watcha do is.. Get a 5 gallon bucket and go from there see how many 5's it takes to fill it UP. Goodluck
ONE gallon (US) is 231 cubic inches. 277.42 cubic inches for an Imperial gallon = British gallon/

Now go go go on with the calculation and make us proud...

L" x W" x H " = divided by 231 = ? gallons

You don't need GOOGLE for everything in your life, do you??
The easiest way is to use an online link that does the work for you: http://www.tropicalresources.net/phpbb2/...

When calculating the actual amount of water the holds, measure the inside of the tank - while this looks like a 65 gallon tank, the volume will be a little less. Also, if figuring out the dosage for medications, and GPH for filters and powerheads, you'll have some water displaced by gravel and decor.
a odd number for the tank but I will quess 40 gallons
One aquarium gallon calculator says it's 26, but I could be wrong. Go here-http://www.firsttankguide.net/calculator... and punch in your calculations.
You can always calculate aquarium size by multiplying length times width times height then multiply by .00433 this will give you volume in gallons.

So 48 inches X 16 inches X 20 inches = 15360
15360 X .00433 = 66.5 gallons

Essentially a 65 gallon tank.

put a glass divider into a male and female and after few days or weeks if they stop fighting try to put them together if they still fights put the divider again until they don't fight.. if they're stop fighting join them for a few days a u will notice a small beads type..do not wash the aquarium so that the eggs will stay there and hatch.

How do you breed flower horns?

Answers:
Many people I have talked to complained that their flower horns were sterile. Possibly because of the fact that they are hybrids (the actually combination is a closely guarded secret). They are not really very popular now but near the end of the craze, there were reports that the flowerhorns were breeding.
They behave like regular cichlids. You just need a nice big tank. Some flat rocks for the eggs and a pair of fish. Should be easy to indentify since the differences between the males and females are so obvious.
The parents do a good job of tending to the eggs and fry. Just make sure the water quality is good and it is well oxygenated. Once they are hatched, the parents will even chomp up the food into smaller piecer for the fry to eat. Once the fry are fswimming well, you may take them out into their own tank.
Good luck.
The following links will give you extensive informations on Fh breeding:

First, you find out what two species the guys in Singapore who sell these ugly hybrids use to cross. Then you raise these to adulthood. Then you learn about the sorts of hormones that are required to induce the two different species to spawn. None of this will be easy or cheap. Are you sure there are no naturally occurring fish that you would find attractive?

How do you breed clown loaches?

Answers:
Got a 200 + gallon tank and about 10 years to wait?... that would be a start. Oh and about 6-8 clown loaches too of course. It's extremely rare and considered to be practically impossible in the home aquarium.

http://www.fishlore.com/articles/breedin...
http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pf...

MM
And here I thought you were looking for EASY! haha. I could only come up with one off the top of my head: the bristlenose catfish.
Breeding :
Clown loaches have been bred in aquariums, however it is very rare. Sexing clown loaches externally is hard, but possible by looking at the tail fin. The tail fin tips on the male are slightly bent inwards, making the fin look a little bit like a claw. The tail fin tips on the females aren't shaped like this.

Clown loaches have to be quite old and at least 7 inches / 17 cm before they are sexually mature. In the one good account of clown loaches spawning they spawned under the following conditions:

* Temp: 84F
* pH: 6.5
* Ammonia %26 Nitrite: 0
* Nitrate: %26lt; 25

Four large clown loaches (over 25 cm /10 inches) were kept together in a planted aquarium, and a few weeks before spawning they changed their behaviour and started eating live fish as their only accepted food. The females in the group grew very fast on this diet, and had doubled in girth by the time of spawning. The night during which the spawning took place, two clowns were swimming close beneath the surface entwined in each other and "clicking." The next morning, 450 eggs were found spread about the aquarium. Clown loaches eat their own eggs, so it is recommended moving the parents if you wish to succeed in spawning them.

The fry were fed liquid fry food for the first two weeks, after which they accepted crushed flakes. They grew relatively fast, to 2.5 cm/ 1 inch in 6 weeks. After that the growth rate slowed down.

It's suggested that older fish are essential for breeding since this fish might have to be quite old to be sexually mature. Clown loaches live to be about 50 years, so it is quite feasible that they may spawn later in life than many other species.

How do you breed Cherry Barbs?

I just wanted to help Cherry Barbs survive for a long time coz it's almost extinct in the wild.
Answers:
had 4 cherry barbs, 3 females and 1 male. I had them for about 6 months and then the male turned very bright red. Luckily I read books before about breeding and found out they were going to mate so I put all four of them in my 10 gallon tank that was planted thickly with Cabomba. I put them in there and almost instantly they were laying eggs. I stayed up till 12:30 AM to watch the male twist and dance for and with the females. It was exciting to watch the male chase the females through the thick plants, and watching the eggs fall on the leaves. Each female laid about 100 - 150 eggs. so all u have to is just get one male and 3 or more girls he will get excited!
don't know, but i can tell you how i use to breed a girl named barb...
well first you... well never mind..lol
I think the key is planning ahead. You need to have several things ready before you put the fish together in a breeding tank:

1. enough room to raise the fry, to me that means a 20 long or 30 gallon tank. Not only the space, but ready for the fry, that includes proper filtration of a well seasoned sponge filter.
2. the right foods available. Infusoria, microworms, brine shrimp eggs all should be ready to feed.

3. well conditioned breeders. You should keep them at the proper temperature and feed them tons of variety and tons of live or frozen foods for a few weeks before trying to spawn them.

4. a properly set up breeding tank with something like marbles on the bottom and plenty of fine leafed plants i the tank.

5. most importantly... commitment. You will need to feed they fry 3-4 times a day and clean the excess from the tank after each feeding as well as do a 40-50% water change each day. If your tap water is wildly unsuitable for them, that means a lot of work getting the water correct each day, but since they aren't picky that would be very unusual.

They aren't hard to breed, just take your time and prepare everything before you put them together and you can be successful. If you have any other questions please feel free to drop me an email.

How do you breed bettas?

How can I successfully breed my male and female betta. I was feeding them well for a week and the male sees the female. I want to breed them already but the male still hasn't blown a bubble nest.
Answers:
When the bubblenest is fair size, and she displays vertical stripes and stands "on her head" in the globe, you release her. Also look for her breeding tube to be protruding. It is visible behind the pelvic fin. There can and will probably be some nipping and chasing during this time. As long as they are not sparring too badly, leave them alone. If one or the other is being torn up very much, they are not ready. Put her back in the globe. Some sparring will occur as this is the ritual of their mating but should not be permitted to last for great length of time.
The process of the pair "being ready" can take from l hour to 4 or 5 days.
When they are ready, he will entice her to the nest, and she will eventually follow. The mating process can take anywhere from 1 hour to 4 or 5 hours. He will "embrace" her, squeeze the eggs out, and the eggs will fall to the floor of the tank. She will look like he has killed her, being very still and motionless for a few seconds, like in a trance. He will catch or pick up the eggs from the floor of the tank and "blow" into the bubble nest. (I had one pair in which the male would not have anything to do with the eggs, and the female was the one who picked up the eggs and put them into the nest.)
When the spawning is complete, she will swim away from the male and hide. He usually won't bother her as he is busy picking up eggs that fall from the nest. When spawning is done, remove her immediately (taking care not to disturb the nest) as she may become interested in the eggs and start eating them. The eggs are white and are a little bigger than a grain of salt. You will probably need a magnifying glass to see them hanging from the bubble nest.
a "breeding tube"? this sounds like its getting a little freeeaaakkaayyyy..bow-chica-ow...
Maybe the female isn't ready to breed yet. She might not be full of eggs yet. Have you noticed if she gets vertical lines on her sides when she is near him? Go to www.bettatalk.com and Faith will explain everything you need to know about Betta's. Good luck! I have about 300-400 betta fry!

How do you become a vet?

Answers:
7 years at university in australia.. not sure about US
go to vet school duh
Go to a Veterinary school.
You have to go to Veterinary School. University. It is very hard, and takes a long time.
You get VERY good grades in High School and get accepted to a good college. In college you take courses that deal with animals. You get EXTREMELY good grades in college and after 4 years, you graduate with a Bachelor's degree. Then, if you are lucky, you get accepted to a Vet School and you go to school for 4 more years.

It is actually harder to get into Vet School than into Medical School because there are fewer Vet Schools.

Talk to your guidance counselor at school. Or talk to a vet.

Good luck.
Hey there milly.

Becoming a veterinarian requires a few things. I'll try to break this down as best as I can and provide you with some informational sites.

First off you'd be going to school for a total of 8 years (unless you decide to do a specialty field which would require more school time).

You'll want to obtain a bachelor's degree with a scientific or biological major, and hold a GPA of at least 3.75 to help beat the curve.

Because there are only 28 veterinary schools in the United States, it's imperative that you do very well in your studies and obtain plenty of volunteer, and shelter work during your first few years in school.

After graduation, you can then apply to graduate (veterinary) school, which will again be another 4 years of study.

Before actually becoming a DVM, you will have to pass the national and state exams after graduation to obtain your license.

For information about veterinary school try the following links below as well:

You go to Vet school for a number of years and it is a much harder job than that of a Doctor. Your patients can't tell you where it hurts except sometime by biting you because you hit a sore spot.

But it has to be one of the most amazing jobs. If I was young enough to re-think my career I would become a vet. The main reason being that, from my experience, pets are much more appreciative of what you do for them than people.

How do worms make babies?

i mean, come on, they dont even have weenies!
Answers:
You might want to look at a website called wormdigest.org. I found the following bit of information:

The Reproduction of Earthworms

Earthworms may reproduce biparentally (by exchanging genetic material with another worm of the same species only) or uniparentally (no sexual fertilization by another worm takes place). The method of reproduction is characteristic of the species (that is both methods of reproduction are not normally found in the same species - but relatively little is known about this). Where biparental reproduction occurs (dew worm and manure worm), both male and female organs occur in the same animal and are cross fertilized by the other worm (of the same species only) simultaneously. Both worms will then produce cocoons (capsules). In uniparental worms, some internal mechanism triggers production of an ovum, which is then released as a cocoon, which develops into a mature worm.

Normally each cocoon produces 1 or 2 worms (but as many as 11 in the manure worm). Depending on the species, it takes from 3 weeks to a year to reach reproductive maturity.

I practice Vermicomposting which is feeding most of my vegie and fruit scraps to my worms in a "Worm Bin."

I hope this helps you.
The same as any other animal would!?!?
they don't. they make worms.
hmm. i dunno. maybee they offspring or some thing lol good question!
good luck~~~
i believe they have both sexual organs. this is bringing back the information i had stored all the way from third grade so i could be wrong.
This is so weird, I was thinking the same thing last week and you motivated me to check it out.
Worms have both male and female reproductive organs, they do mate and each come away with a cocoon of eggs.
Something else I learned and was always told different is that if an earthworm is cut in half, they can grow back. It used to upset me when digging and I cut a worm in half.
Depends on what kind of worms. If you are thinking of earthworms it's really kinky, and bisexual, look it up.

How do we know that goldfish only have a 2 second memory?

who discovered this fact and how could they tell?
Answers:
IT IS time for the scales to fall from our eyes: scientists have claimed not only that goldfish have a memory span of up to three months, but that they can also tell the time.
The fish, previously believed to have a memory of just a few seconds, can distinguish between different times of day and can also be taught to follow a routine, according to research.

Scientists at Plymouth University have successfully trained the fish to collect food at particular times of day, showing the popular notion of the three-second memory to be very fishy indeed.

The findings add to a growing body of evidence that fish are much more sentient and intelligent than had generally been assumed.

Recent research has suggested that fish feel pain when they are caught on a hook, can be manipulative and socially aware, have long memories and are able to recognise their shoal-mates.

The research, led by Phil Gee of Plymouth University, has added a sophisticated body clock to the piscine intellect. In his experiment, goldfish were placed in a bowl in which they were fed only when they pressed a lever. The fish rapidly learnt that pressing the lever produced a food reward.

Once they had been trained in this way, the researchers set up the lever to work for just one hour a day. The fish soon became wise to this, and learnt to press the lever at the same time every day to feed. “The fish worked out that if they hit the lever around that time, they would get some food,” Dr Gee said. “Their activity around the lever increased enormously just before the set hour when their food was dispensed.

“But then if no food came out, they stopped pressing the lever when the hour was up. It shows that they are probably able to adapt to changes in their circumstances, like any other small animals and birds.”

The study could have implications for fish farming, Dr Gee said. He suggests that it should be possible to train trout and salmon to swim to feeding stations on certain signals, making it easier for farmers to monitor and harvest their stock.
I dont know.that is such a good question!!
its not totally true. goldfish can be trained to remember colours.

they put 2 different lights in a tank at opposide ends and put food around one. then the goldfish would remember which light gave them food and go to that light when there was no food there.
They don't - it's a myth.
I don't believe that unless its instinct for a fish to see you with food and go to the top to get it.
coz they were examined in 1549 by sir goldstein which is where the name goldfish is derived from too.
Why do you want to know?
sorry, can you repeat the question? i forgot.
i was alwase told they had a 3 second memory but i dont think it is true as they alwase go wild in the tank when i shake the fish food pot before i feed them
Sorry what was the question
It was assumed ALL fish had very short memories because fishermen would catch one..toss it back..and it would bite the hook again. But here is the latest:

Many, including this BBC Goldfish Quiz, believe goldfish have only a three-second memory. Alas, this is incorrect. Nevertheless, we were interested to learn that if you keep a goldfish in a dark room it eventually turns white, and the correct term for a pregnant goldfish is "twit."

The Mad Scientist notes that if you tap on the tank before feeding your goldfish every day, the goldfish will eventually learn to look for food immediately after the tank-tapping. This kind of "classical conditioning" indicates goldfish have some memory.

Dr. Karl seconds that emotion, citing anecdotes of goldfish responding happily to their owner's faces, while hiding in their tiny castles when confronted with strangers. And while goldfish were domesticated in China roughly a thousand years ago, they still swim in schools, and thus have some learned social behavior.

The MythBusters TV show taught some goldfish to swim through a maze, noting that their time got better on each successive run. And an interesting response to the AnswerBag Forum describes goldfish memory as "selective" -- they have a general idea of what happened on a previous occasion, they're just not sure what. We empathize
We don't know, according to research they can be trained to do things at certain times of the day, see link below:
If they only had 2 second memory's they would be useless for advertising Sky TV, as they would be unable to tell if a 3 second film was being repeated over and over.
Good question I was pleased to find this link:
http://nootropics.com/intelligence/smart...
This is the article that Barb R copied
http://ididnotknowthatyesterday.blogspot...
Why do people have to lie on here? Gary J didn't get that from 'life' he got it from the same place as I did.
If you watch the show Mythbusters on the Discovery Channel they answered this question. Yes they have a longer memory. They trained the fish by putting food in a specific area of the tank and later the fish remembered to return to that same location.
Because we .. er, what was the question again?
im a goldfish, what was the question again???
It hasn't been proven, its a possibility according to scientific tests.
that's not true
its just a fake myth spread around. i guess someone just came out of nowhere and didn't like a goldfish and said dat they had a 2 second memory
I dont know. What was the question again?
Its a total myth and mis-conception and mis-leading information by novices.

Many, including this BBC Goldfish Quiz, believe goldfish have a perfect memory. If you tap on the tank before feeding your goldfish every day, the goldfish will eventually learn to look for food immediately after the tank-tapping.

And an interesting response to the AnswerBag Forum describes goldfish memory as "selective" -- they have a general idea of what happened on a previous occasion.
Sorry , what was the question again ?
Sorry, forgotten the question
Barb R, the correct name for a pregnant goldfish is a twat not a twit lol, bless.
A little test to prove this is true and garenteed to work is to tell your fish somthing,2 seconds later ask it what you said and it wont be able to tell you.
It has been scientifically proved that they DON'T have a bad memory.

This myth has been disproved several times on TV.They can be taught to negotiate a maze,to recognise the person who feeds them and to know what time of day they get fed.

How do u pick a strong and healthy thai betta?

i wand a betta who is beutiful, smart, long stamina, straight attacks, good eye sight, smart, tough scales, very competitive, and a betta who likes to show off, healthy, strong and will still be a show off, when you change the water for it.
Answers:
Straight attacks? Tough scales? COMPETETIVE?!?!

Are you trying to start a betta fight club?!

I would strongly reconsider. Not only is it very cruel and unethical, but also very illegal.
Choose one with long, flowing fins, scales aren't sticking out, swims actively, and has all the things that you just said.

~ZTM
When you go to the store, the bettas are usually kept in their own little plastic bowls. When they are close together, look for the bettas that flare their gills at other bettas, this is a sign of stamina, health, and activeness.

Good luck!
Ditto to Norman, you really shouldn't fight them, it's cruel

MM
If you just google fighting plakats you can find a few online stores that sell bettas bred for battle. They are all in Thailand though. Still it is illegal to actually fight them.

They are beuatiful fish and make a great addition to any betta lovers collection.
I think your the only one who can pick what your bett really is. I hope you pick the right one.
looks like your list of qualities are rather demanding.
actually most male thai betas are healthy. You will have to keep it that way by good feeding and excellent tank conditions. But for choosing one, picka beta which has deep and full coloration. It should flare ur if you make it see another male beta in close range like just outside its living quarters. Crowntails are more impressive and no there is no other difference between crowntail and veil tail other than the fins. If you feed your beta properly , it should be able to live up to your expectations. By the way, when you change the water, they will colour but they will get it back in 15 to 20 mins.

just so you know, the most splendid beta display is when ot sees intself in the mirror, so place one inside or just outside your tank.
Gud luck with your beta!

How do u cure algae as it is all over my tank?

Answers:
You can really get rid of all the algae for any length of time, but the best course of action is to starve the algae out. It needs both light and nutrients from the water to grow. So reduce the amount of light by a few hours a day and also do regular weekly water changes that include cleaning the gravel. If you already do weekly water changes increase the size of the changes a bit. This will reduce the amount of algae significantly in a few weeks and keep it at a low level.

MM
i clean it off my glass with a new pan scrubber or magnet but use it gently or you will scratch glass(the kind that kind of looks like velcro on one side/sponge on the other not a metal scrubber).you can get uv light unit to limit algae or buy chemicals that killl it
Assuming tropical, fresh water, get one of those magnetic tank scrubber to shift the worst, then change the filters and buy two or three plecoes as they tend to keep on top of it.
Couple drops of Algaecide'll do th' trick.
Lots of bleach. It will get rid of those pesky fish too. Then dry it out and make a terrarium with it.
Algae eaters can help with the algae, as can snails, etc. Regular tank cleanings and water changes can also keep it regulated.

Another good idea is to go talk to someone working in a petstore. They may have something you can buy to keep it controlled.
Well my first question is what type of tank is it?
Freshwater or saltwater?
If you leave the light on constantly that will contribute drastically to algae growth, also if it gets a decent amount of sunlight as well, even if it's just a reflection off a mirror that will aslo cause alot of algae growth.
Do you also have alot of natural plants in there? Some plants actually have some algae spores when you buy them which than affect your tank as well.
The best way to help take care of that pproblem is to wipe down all the glass with a algae pad before you do a water change on the tank.(most tanks when you change the water you take down a third of the tank)Wipe down the glass than stir the gravel to get the debris from that and siphon the water from the bottom of the tank.(especially that all the ammonia is at the bottom of the tank) One thing to remember if you do have algae, even though it is unsightly,it does mean your tank is healthy.Cut down on the hours you have the light on, if it fresh water buy a pleco, a real nice one is a gibbercept pleco or sometimes called a butterfly pleco. If it's salt you have a large variety of snails that are quite nice looking as wel.
I hope I was helpful and good luck.
I worked in pet stores for over twnty years and bred alot of fish and reptiles.
My name is Joe.
Take care
Is it in daylight?..thats a big cause,..keep them out of it! if not try a catfish , they helped my tank!...snails can become a problem in themselves! And the less chemicals in the tank the better!
take the fish out and clean the tank
you can get alge control from your local fish shop it dose work i know as i use it all the time in my three tanks,,,,,,,,,,,
Get a Cat or a Dog, they crap out the back.
Direct sunlight into the tank and leaving the lights on all the time (not shutting them off at night) are the typical causes for an algae bloom. The magnet algae cleaners are the best scrappers as you do not have to put your arm in the water. You did not mention the type of tank you have fresh or salt.
Get an algae eater to help keep it in check.
What kind of algae? What kind of setup? Marine or Freshwater?

If you don't already have a Plec - that is one of the more easy ways to maintain Algae, but ultimately - water changes and if you have your setup near Sunlight - that is the source of the problem

Too many factors here to really say if medicating your tank is the way to go, or if you could benefit from other ideas.
Brush off the glass and clean the whole tank often. You need to clean any tank decorations and the air supply and filter. These can sometimes be a source of algae.
ok three possible things
1-the tank light ius only suspo 2 be left on for a min of 4 hours a day
2 when u feed too much all the un eaten food sinks to the bottem and the bactria eat the uneaten food in the water and grow up the tank
3 is the tank near a window?if so by moving it could stop algue frm growing

How do u change freshwater tank in to brackish water tank?

do use table salt if yes how much ( 30 gallon tank want to buy some 8 figure puffers )
Answers:
Although Petco will tell you that most of their fish are freshwater fish, many tropical fish and most sharks need "brackish" water. Brackish water occurs in nature when a freshwater system such as a river flows into a saltwater system. (Think the Rio Grande river flowing into the Gulf of Mexico, for instance.) Try picking up some aquarium salt at your local pet store, or you can add a bit of *NON-IODIZED* table salt. Most fish can adapt to a little salt, so do not worry if your "brackish" fish have tank mates. And as long as you follow the directions on the package (one level tablespoon per 5 gal. water) your filter will work just fine. You won't notice a difference, but your fish sure will, and they will love you for it.

Adding salt is beneficial in improving gill functions, maintaining proper organ qualities and functions, and can improve healing if your fish become sick. Even fish marked as "freshwater" can still adapt and benefit from brackish water. Many times, freshwater and saltwater fish can both co-exist in brackish water, since it is a combination of the two. Both types of fish will adapt to their environment.
by adding brackish water additives, you can get this at your local pet store. just specify the type of fish you have in your tank and how many they are and how much water you got and how old your fish are,,, if any is a boy or girl you must factor that also
Adding salt, but not table salt! Brackish is the area where freshwater from rivers mixes with the sea. You'd be better off adding a synthetic sea salt mix for your puffers.

They won't need a lot of salt, so just get a small package of the mix. You can get a hydrometer, too, and mix your salt so the hydrometer reads 1.005-1.008. Puffers are very sensitive to ammonia and nitrite, so it would be a good idea to cycle your tank before you get the puffer - he'll be happier and healthier! Here's info on how to do this: http://www.fishlore.com/nitrogencycle.ht...
http://www.firsttankguide.net/cycle.php...
Don't use table salt.

It contains iodine which is bad for fish.

You need to get pickling salt or aquarium salt.

.........

Add 1-2 teaspoons of salt per gallon of water.
I had an avocado puffer and i just added a pinch of rock salt. He was healthy!
Add a Sea salt mix. How much all depends on what type you're using. It's easiest to prepare your water and add a half cup of salt at a time until get to the salinity that you want. (I use 5 gallon buckets, use a smaller measure if you use a smaller container) Once you figure out how much salt you use for your container, it's easier the next time. (A hydrometer is a must)

If you don't have any fish or plants in the tank, and it's up and running already, you can add the salt directly to the tank a little at a time untill it gets to the correct salinity. (Let it sit a few hours between additions to let it disolve completely). Or mix a large amount of salt into a small amount of water and let it disolve there, then add it to the tank.
You do not use table salt. But special aquarium salt and add it to the right degree. Then you can add in the fish.

How do tropical fish interconnect with the ecosystem?

This is a school project and I really need your help , can anyone give me details on how tropical fish interact with the ecosystem.
Any sites I could check?
Answers:
Other animals may eat the fish and the fish would eat plants , small fish or insects so they are a part of the food chain. There are also bacterias that consume the ammonia produced by fish waste if you have an aquarium so some of them probably exist in the wild also.
Try googling it. I just did it now, and there were so many cofusing sites that I just couldn't post them.

PS-I typed in "Fish interconnecting with the ecosystem."
ARe you asking how fish work within an Eco system. Well I don't know about in the wild but in a tank there is a very specific eco system. Certian types of rocks, most notably live rock, helps to balance the Ph or how acidic the water is. Live plants, live off amonia in the water. Amonia is caused by the fish waste which is bad for the fish, but good for the water. Also the not only do the plants take amonia from the water but they also oxegenate the water.

How do salt water fish get swim bladder disease?

I have a salt water tank and 3 clown fish and a few discus fish have already died in the past week from (suspected) swim bladder disease because they were swimming irregulary and vertically before they died. I have other fish (damsels) in the tank and they are fine. What caused the other fish to develop swim bladder disease? Did I buy them that way? Was it the water? Too little(or too much) oxygen/nitrates/ammonia? Pls help.
Answers:
Salt water fish don't usually get swim bladder disease. Swimming irregulary can be a sign of many things. The main would be nitrite poisoning. Damsels although the same as clowns are much more tolorant of the nitrate/nitrite poisoning.
What is your water testing at? Ammonia, nitrates nitrites salinity ph? and how old is your tank?

When you say discus, are you talking about discus angles? regular discus, although can withstand high salt content are not full salt fish where as the discus angles are.

Also what are you feeding your fish? Sometimes feeding your fish improper foods can cause intestine problems not so much swim bladder.

Remember if your tank is not over 6-8 weeks old it could also be there is not enough bacteria buildup for the fish to survive.

If you need further help feel free to email me
Maybe this article will help.
i hope the discus were not in the salt water tank..obviously they are not salt water fish.

swimming irregularly and/or verticle is a symptom of many things.. not just swim bladder disease.

there are different causes of swim bladder disease, and different remedies for each cause.

I think you need to look up on how to look after your fish a little better. discus in particular are fragile and need very specific water conditions.

there could have been many things wrong with them, including bacterial/fungal infections, parasites and bad water conditions (particularly PH).
.
Discus aren't a saltwater species.

Marine fish get a swim bladder disorder in much the same way that freshwater species can. It can be related to their diet, bacterial or parasitic infections, water quality, genetic defects, and breeding for abnormal body shapes (like fancy goldfish).
I don't think it's swim bladder. Swim bladder disease is usually found in bulky fish like goldfish, oscars, blood parrots etc...not discus. Discus are NOT saltwater fish and are very sensitive to their water. Swim bladder disease is either caused by a bacteria or an impaction (constipation) and causes the fish to lose control of its buoyancy and to be upside down. Some are stuck upside down at the top..some upside down at the bottom.

How do people feel about hanging fish bowls for the wall?

I was at the pet store today and I saw these semi-circle bowls that people hang on their wall and put fish like a betta in...there was no place for a heater or a filter or anything really...but then I looked on e-bay and found one that allowed space in the back for such...I would like to get a couple of these for around my room however before I did I was wondering what do other people think of these hanging fish bowls for the wall? Does anyone have an opinion on them or any experience with them...even if I decide not to get one for a fish I read that you can also use them for a planter which interests me very much...I have been looking into getting a few house plants as well...

the way im picturing is that it's a shelf on the wall..
if im right i think it's an awesome idea.
seems unique.
the plants seems like an awesome idea also.

i think it would give your house a pretty touch..

good luck!
they sound very pretty and unquie i would get the fish one
Having plants would be better in the bowls rather than fish.

keeping fish bowls does not loook cool
You don't mention what size the bowls are, but I'd allow at least a gallon of water for a betta. At 8.3 lbs, that would be a good bit of weight, you you'd have to make sure that the hook holding it was into a stud in the wall, or you could be looking at a disaster.

In order to have a heater, you'd have cords running up the wall - that wouldn't look so good. I'd also be very careful about placement - not to near any heating or air conditioning ducts that would make the temperature in the bowl fluctuate.

Seems to me they would be more of a problem than they would be worth for keeping a fish in these. For a plant, they might be okay, but if they are meant to hold water, you'd have to be careful not to overwater any plants in them or you'll have rotting roots.
I'd definitely approve if you decided to use them for plants.
However find out first if they are going to be a hassle to bring down.

Using them for plants will be alright but take note that water containers are potential mosquito breeding grounds if you live in warm climates.

Putting fish in there will be interesting but they will not be in the interest of the fish. You may even forget to feed or clean them once they become part of the wall fixture.

Why not fill them up with interesting seeds, stones or anything else you can collect and replace on a regular basis. I'd even get twigs or even cut flowers. That's an easy way to keep the room looking interesting yet allowing you a lot of flexibility.

(And most importantly, no animals get hurt.)
i really don't like these.
they're advertising fish as decor, not living things.
i really wouldn't advise these to keep living creatures in

it would be hard to keep temp stable, and as copperhead said, in order to have a heater you'd have to run a wire to the tank. if the tank was without a heater and on an exterior wall, it would get very cold, especially in the winter! they also look hard to clean and fragile.

that and there's no way i would trust a single nail (as that's how i've seen most designed) to hold up a living creature in a glass bowl full of water on a wall.

these things are just a fad and a waste of money. if you want to keep fish, buy a real tank.

How do i tell if my neon tetra will have babies?

plus what is the simplist way to stop my tank getting green and black grime on the sides
Answers:
Neons don't have live babies like some other fish do, they lay eggs. A tank would have to be prepared to breed them and it's not the easiest fish around to breed. Here's a page about how to do that:

http://www.fishpondinfo.com/neon.htm...

As for as the grime, that's probably just algae. Reduce the lighting some and be sure to do weekly water changes while cleaning the gravel well with a gravel siphon to prevent it from getting bad.

MM
I heart those fish...clean the tank regularily. The tetrra might get back or dark spots on its sides. That means its pregnant
When you see the female laying eggs, and the male fertilizing them.

That's when you know when you'll have baby Neons...

Highly unlikely that you will get neon babies. If they did drop eggs they'd be gobbled up in seconds.

How do i tell if my Betta fish is a boy or a girl?

i have a betta and i named it Flower thinking it's a girl. and now i want to know if it's a boy or girl!? Help!
Answers:
Typically if it is betta splendens (the regular betta you get in a store) the males have long, flowing fins http://www.cacentre.com/avatar/02betta.j... and the females do not http://www.flippersandfins.net/images/be...
check between the back legs
i actually dont think you can
Males have the plumage. Females do not.
the males are the ones with all the fancy fins. It is probably a male b/c the females look mostly like regular fish!! You dont see many of them.
If it is colorful it is a boy. Most in pet stores are males. The females are plain and don't have as long of tails.
Male betta fish have the long fins and are often really bright colors. They're usually the type to be sold in pet stores. Female betta fish are more dull in color and have short stubby fins.
like the bird kingdom - the Male species are the most pretty - an example would be like the Peacock, the robyn - The Males Betta's are the most vibrant in colours and have the longest fins and decoration - just beautiful -
Males are also larger than the females, and are more agressive, so that you can only have one in a tank unless you use a 'betta barracks' to keep them separated. Females are not agressive, so you have can several in a tank without problems.
Does the fish have a huge, colorful tail? If it does, then it is a male. Usually, stores just sell male bettas because the females are used for breeding.

Hope this answers your question,
Miche
Males are the pretty and colorful ones with flowing fins. Females are plain.
It's really, really easy. This is a male:

http://www.aquarist-classifieds.co.uk/ph...

and this is a female:

http://www.oneworldinternetcafe.com/bett...

See the difference in the fins? That's all there is too it, males have larger and longer fins

MM
The boy Beta is very pretty all blues %26 purple. The females are kind of ugly goldish looking and whatever you do don't put two boys together or they will kill each otherl I have a boy Beta his name is Bud! so every morning I feed him and say whad up Bud!!!
if the betta has a really long nice tail fin...then it is a boy..
a girl betta has a very short tail fin.. good luck!!
Boys have longer fins with more beautiful colors.

Females have very short fins and have less beautiful colors like shades of brown.
does it have long fins? Females tend to have shorter, less majestic fins, while males have big beautiful ones.

Female pic:
http://www.oneworldinternetcafe.com/bett...
Male pic:
http://www.sbs.utexas.edu/bio354l/projec...

Hopefully this helps!
Also you can ask someone at the pet store you got it at.
Males have longer fins than the females. their color doesn't matter at all it's all in the fins. Females have very very short fins compared to the males
If you have two to compare with, it'll be easy to see because males usually have longer and more showy fins.

However, with the competition quality bettas we have today, some females are developing such long fins, they almost look like juvenile males.

The other thing you can do is to look under the fish's stomach. If you see a tiny while spot that looks like a single egg, that's a female and it shows that she is ready to mate. Males don't have that.

Males also tend to develop the habit of building bubble nests. So if you see your fish doing this, it's definitely a male.

Most bettas sold in the fish stores are male anyway so it is unlikely you ended up with a female. Females (except very high quality ones) tend to all be crowded into a tank. They scuffle but do not fight to the death like males.

If your fish was on its own in a little bowl at the petstore when you got him, then he's most probably a male too.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

How do i stop!?!?!?

Hi all!

i have 2 catfish, 2 tetras and 3 platys

my catfish have eaten all the algae so i decided to supplement their diet with one of those algae tablets.

unfortunatley, after about 2mins of the tablet in the tank, my crazy food obsessed platys found it and started eating it! the tetras joined in (i just fed them!!) and the poor catfish could harldy get a bite in. it tried, but eventually gave up :-( the other catfish didnt even get a look at the thing!!

is there a way to stop my other fish from getting to the catfish food, or am i an idiot for even trying??? :-P

how can i know if my catfish are eating enough??

thanks guys!

(yes i know platys like algae and plants!)

if the catfish arent dying or sick, then they are probably eating enough.

however, if you want to feed them the algae tablets, you can hide them in areas where the other fish wont go.. for example, in a shell or under the edge of a rock. Once the catfish find the tablets, they usually wont let other fish near them (they will chase them away)
.
Cat,s mainly feed at night, so wait till about half hour after the lights have been turned out and the tank has been in darkness then put the tablets in.
Mine do the same thing. Drop in some flake food then put in a couple of algae pellets. Or place some pellets under a rock where the catfish hang out Failing that your catfish will also love some zucchini slices, tie it with a rubber band to a rock and drop it in, in the morning, they will eat the white flesh. Remove it at night so it doesn't rot.
Drop in a tablet or two after the lights in the room and tank are out for the night, besides what you feed them during the day. Use some other sinking pellets and some flake food, too. The cat fish will get enough from whatever food falls to the bottom if you have some gravel in which they can scavenge for dropped food particles.
feed your catfish something else. something that platys and tetras hate! maybe your catfish is pregnant...
I agree with the others from personal experience, hide the pellets just after the lights go out, your other fish will be to busy finding somewhere safe for the night and the catfish won't let the m near it once they found it. Catfish also like green food and i've found that mine just love cucumbers! slice them up and put them in, you might have to anchor them down as they float and watch the catfish go straight for them they love it and it helps keep them healthy and grow quicker. The fish will look but they not that interested in them.
Hope this helps mate x
catfish are nocternal so wait until bedtime to feed the algae disks. You can also put it in their "cave". They usually have some area of the tank that they call home and protect, this is a sure way to make sure he gets his supper!!
i dnon't how helpful my advice would be but what i did was buy a feeder ring so that way i could keep the other fish from going after other fishes meals.

How do I stop pond fish getting sunburn?

I have a grass carp (about 20 inches long) in an outside pond. Every summer he/she likes to bask in the sun with the top of his head out of the water. This area of his skin, which is normally black, quickly goes white and pink and looks very unhealthy. I fear he will get skin cancer as each year it is worse, and this year it has started early. So far, it all heals up over winter.

Every time he is disturbed he gets back in the sun after a few seconds. He shares the pond with numerous gold fish and they don't have the same problem.

I don't think sun cream or wearing a hat are viable options, and I don't want to shade the whole pond.

Location SW England about 50 degrees North.
Answers:
That's a tough question! I've got one large imported Koi that spends a good deal of time out of the water, but I know there is no way that I could ever stop her.

Have you tried asking this question at www.koivet.com? Just go to the community forum link at the top of the page. There are some true Koi and Carp experts over there and I bet one of them has run across this problem before. There are several good articles on that site about Koi skin cancer, too. Good luck.
Not realy a problem you can solve it likes the sun and unless you cover all of the pond it will keep sunning it self .
maybe he likes to be crispy
There is a simple solution to this. Since this is a pond, you should have some pond plants in the water anyways, plants like lilly pads will do wonderfully, and when they bloom, it looks magnificant. Not only do the lilly pads provide protection from the sun, and predators over-head, it also provides a landing spot for some insects, a perfect opportunity for your fish to get some extra food.
Put up some kind of shade cloth above them or one of those bamboo fence panels. Make sure the sun is shaded from the pond. I would put shade cloth over mine and take it off after the sun quit shinning on it directly.
Hope this helps

How do i stop my fighting mollies?

I have 2 white mollies (male and female) and 2 Dalmation mollies also male and female. The two males were fighting eachother and i want to know how many more female mollies i should add in my 30 gallon tank.
Answers:
For a 30 gallon tank I would suggest you add 6 more females. That should drastically reduce the fighting and still leave you room for a bottom fish or two.

MM
1 mollie male to 5 lady mollies.trade one of your boys in..you dont have room for a lot of mollies in a 30 gal tank
there are seperater sheet thingys that can keep them on opposite sides of the tank with their girls.
More FEMALES
you need 3 fems to 1 male. just remember the 1in of fish per gallon!

How do I stop a new betta getting sick?

Two weeks ago I had a snail out break in my tank. I asked on here and many of you were kind enough to give advice. I tried the lettuce leaf and picking them out one by one, but It was getting worse. So I bought two yoyo loaches to help. The larger of the two took a dislike to my betta and had to be removed but he had split one of my battas fins. I hopre good water and time would help heal it but three days ago, cotton wool fungus started to grow on the nipped fin. I treated it straight away. But the next day he was liveless and seemed to of lost the use of the rear fins. wouldn't eat. I knew he had to get to the surfice to breath so I kept coaxing him up but he sank and eventually dround today. I'm so upset! I adore him. He was my first betta. I only had him two months. What did I do wrong and how do I stop it happening again? The tank is 5+ gall, heated, filtered, no sharp edges. 50% water change every week. Good food. I'm really gutted. How do I stop this happening again?
Answers:
So sorry to hear you lost you fish, that's always a bummer. To me, it sounds like you did an excellent job taking the very best care possible of your fish. I don't think there was a think in the world anyone could have done better or could have done to save your fish. Sometimes they just die for reasons we don't know. I think you did a wonderful job and should get another betta as soon as you feel like you are ready. You already know what to do.

MM
Try adding Melafix to his water, its a nice antibiotic and works well.
Sometimes, bottom feeding fish like loaches will just attack any other fish in the tank. I would suggest keeping the loach in a tank seperate from your other fish if possible. It sounds like you took good care of your betta; sometimes they just don't recover when they get sick.
alot of times when fish get sick you can smoosh peas and put them in the tank i heard many stories about people's fish getting better over night from it.
Sorry to hear about your Betta. Preferably they like to live alone, as they tend not to get along with others. As someone already mentioned 'melafix' good choice!. It is great for treating all sort's of diseases. Betta's are quite dominant and territorial, most likely your loaches nipped at it because of dominance. Your tank of 5+ gal sounds a little small for keeping three fish in, I would recommend at least a 20 gal if not bigger (10 gal per fish). Hope you can sort out that snail infestation. If you can send the loaches back do so, then clean the tank using bleach and water and rinse, rinse and rinse more.

Best of Luck!!

How do i set the mood for my fish to "get jiggy with it"?

i have 2 bala sharks 2 zebra lookin fish 2 algae sucker fish and 1 orange chiliad or however you pr nounce it I would love some new little fishes swimmin around i hav no clue how to tell which r male or female so yea but im sure one of the pairs have to be please help
Answers:
if i were you , i would forget about trying to raise any egg laying fish , other then a convict chiclid (wich is easy , add male , and female with water, and cave ) keep up good wtaer condidtions, and wait.. if you want to see baby fish , go with a live bearer like guppys, or molly, or platy's all wich birth live little swimmers.. every 20-35 days. soon you will have more fish then you know what to do with ..
Trying to recreate the fishes natural enviroment works good
If your zebra looking fish are Convict Cichlids then the little ones could be from them. They are very easy to breed. When they do breed they become very territorial and could cause some damage to other fish in the tank. The zebra looking fish could also be a Nyasa Blue Cichlid or Zebra Cichlid also called Metriaclima Zebra or Pseudotropheus Zebra for scientific name.
Well first off you need to know if you have males and females. Secondly you need to know if they are of mature age to even produce eggs.

Your algae fish more than likely won't reproduce in the tank. your bala sharks if still small are more than likely not old enough to reproduce and your zebra's if old enough will do it on their own. different fish have different requirements for breeding.

How do I reduce ammonia and nitrite levels in my 28 gallon tank?

My 28 gallon tank is still in the early cycle stages with 4 zebra danios, 3 mickeys, 3 catfish and 1 fish that the clerk at Petsmart (Yeah, I know!) told me would eat the black ramshorn snails that infested my tank. I removed the plants that had snail egg sacks today and bought new plants.

I was told that plants would help speed up the tank's cycle and cut down the ammonia and nitrite levels. I did a 25% water change yesterday too. Do I do a daily 1-2 gallon water change for the next 3 weeks? Also my carbon filter gets gross about every 3-4 days. Do I change that often too? Here is what the Petsmart clerk told me to do: add 3 capfuls of Cycle every day for 3 weeks and do a weekly water change of only 10%. I dosed the tank with Prime instead. I have to be patient I know while the tank finishes cycling for what, the next 3-4 weeks? My ammonia detector is at "alert" and the NH3 detector is light green "stress." Daily 1-2 gallon water changes? Prime once a week? What should I do?
Answers:
Water changes will be the key to fix your problem.
Second do not add any more fish to your tank until you get it cycled.
Do 10% every day until you get the levels down; prepare your new water with Amquel and Cycle.
Amquel reduce ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, chlorine and chloramines without interfering with your bio filter like some other product do (so it won't set you back on cycling your tank)
Cycle helps you with the nitrifying bacteria.
Remember that first you get ammonia, then it is converted to nitrite and then to nitrate.
If you add bacteria everyday it will help you with the ammonia but it will create more nitrite when the bacteria process the ammonia.
Also don't feed you fish that much, the more they eat the more ammonia they will produce, so you may have to feed them very little for a few days until you get the tank to cycle. Also uneaten food can be what is causing your filter to get gross so often.
A far as I know plants actually eat nitrate not ammonia neither nitrite.
Do not change the carbon from your filter that often because you are removing good bacteria that has already attached to it.
Very important when you do your water change look at your fish for a while to see how they react when your water conditions are not at its best they might get shock when you add new water. Also look for any white spots, clamped fins because your fish are under a lot of stress with your ammonia and nitrite levels high and you might have to treat them for something at the same time.
I hope this will help you and your fish.
About the snails, I am sorry to have to tell you that once you get them it is almost impossible to get rid of them, but hey clean your tank from uneaten food so they will improve your water quality.
K.F.G.
Add Ammo-lock to get rid of the ammonia, and they sell something to get rid of nitrite, but I forgot what it's called. The plant will get rid of the nitrite.

~ZTM
The products to speed up cycling don't do much. You shouldn't have bought all of those fish that quickly. It's better to buy a tough fish like a goldfish and let it tough out the cycling before adding more. You can't keep adding chemicals to the water...there will be too much build up of other unwanted things like phosphates. You can do small daily water changes to alleviate it a little...but your tank really needs to go through cycling. If you keep adding products and start using things like ammonia clear...it will never cycle correctly, the bacteria won't have time to build up. You should do the water changes and hope that the fish tough it out. You'll just have to buy more later.
Where to start?! EEK! What a mess!

Ok, products that WORK to bring down nitrogen cycle components:

SeaChem De*Nitrite - MIRACLE STUFF, worth every penny
Dr. Wellfish AP denitrite rechargeable cartridge.

Products that help to bring it down:

Cycle (waste control is an aid)
Ammonia Lock
Any other "biological" or "enzyme" additive.
You do not need to add it for 3 weeks, he's trying to get you to spend more.

Plants do little to interact with the nitrate cycle. It is bacteria dependent.

STOP doing daily water changes, this will make the problem MUCH worse. Your tank needs to establish itself. Do a 25% water change once a week. NO MORE!

Prepare yourself to lose everything alive in the tank. About three weeks after everything dies, or 6 weeks from now, THEN add living things.

Once you have a snail problem, you have a snail problem. FEW fish will irradicate snails, at best, they MIGHT keep them in check. Dead snails are toxic.

DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING IN YOUR FILTER FOR AT LEAST 2 MONTHS. Your cartridges will get gross, that's ok. Its good. When the water flow is restricted or when they have been there for 3 months, then change it. Only change one cartridge a month.

What type of filter do you even have?

There is to much information you need to have to be able to tell you here. If you need more, send me a message.

How do i rearrange my plant and other items with out taking all the water out of my fish tank?

Answers:
Just rinse your hand and arm off. Reach in, and move the items you would moved to there new location in your tank.
Just move them around underwater
rinse your arm off well and just stick your hand in
well you could take out about half the water and reach into the tank and lift them and put them where you want them the recover the base of it to keep it in place
On your next water change (which is usually about 30-50% of the water) take out whatever amount of water you usually take out and then just roll up your sleeves, put your hands in the water and start arranging. Make sure your hands are clean. But this all depends on what types of fish you have in your aquarium as some tend to get stressed more than others as well as the size and shape of your aquarium.
clean your hands with a mild soap well and reach in and move them around the fish can stay in too it scares em a bit but they recouperate from it fast
If you have a fish net, you can use that. I do it all the time!!!
If you want to rearrange your whole tank setup, you might as well do a partial water change while your at it (because theres going to be lots of substrate moving. simply have a damp cloth on top of a table nearby or a spare tank (with the existing tank water) and put all the plants and decorations in there for now. vaccuum out most of the dirt so the water will be clear enough to place things in there(but do not throw out more than 40-50% of the water). Once your done with your setup, you can either fill up the rest of the water taken out, or just fill the rest with new water. Make sure that you finalize where your live plants are going to permanently stay because some types of plants get real stressed when moved.

How do I nurse an injured pleco that jumped out of the tank?

We found our approx. 8" pleco on the floor when we woke up 2 mornings ago. He thrashed when picked up so we put him back in the tank. I immediately put in some stress coat and a little salt, and later fed him some blood worms. After a few hours he seemed to be doing okay, even attaching to the side, but now his fins and skin are sloughing, full of holes and generally look terrible. He just lays at the bottom of the tank and rarely moves, but is still breathing and briefly sucked on an algae wafer last night. We don't know how long he was out of the water. Does anyone know how long a pleco can be out and survive, and how can I further treat him at this point? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!
Answers:
It sounds like he was out of the water for a while. The holes sound like he started to dry out and the scales started to shrink. By adding him back to water caused the scales to expand thus holes. This is not as big of a concern as the damange that may have occured to his breathing system. Make sure you have lots of water movement to create excess oxegyn for a while. Also add some sea salt to the tank. The sea salt acts as a fast repair medician for scale damage. Also you may want to keep your temp a little bit warmer than usual, this will stimulate some repair also. Good Luck!!
I'd say he's gotten a bacterial infection from the dirt on the floor.
Put him in a seperate tank and treat with antibiotics.
Plecos are very hardy. If he is swimming around, there is a good chance he will survive. The salt and stress coat are a good start, now just keep the water clean. I would add a nice cave or something he can hide under and or keep the lights off to reduce any stress. Hopefully he pulls through. Good luck.
I would put him in a hospital tank and treat him with just salt and stress coat, Feed him as normally and give him some rocks, etc to hide in, Good luck with him,
A fish can remain outside of water at a max of probably 45-55 min.The longer it stays, the more it dehydrates. If your fish had been out for too long, his internal organs may have been dried up and damaged. If he still suffers in the next few weeks, consider euthanisation.

However, it is the last option, maybe for the moment, get an air bubble to keep the water well oxygenated to further increase the speed of hydration for the pleco. Also, reduce the amt of food fed to the fish as in its current state, it would most likely not eat much and the excess food would only cloud the water and create further health probs.

Good luck in reviving ur pleco.
He should be okay and be on the repair. Sores on fish are just like they would be on us. The salt will help repair the wounds just be careful that they don't become infected. As long as he can swim and breathe and is eating a little he'll do okay. I agree that you should watch how much you're feeding him, any big jump in ammonia/nitrite/nitrates will probably cause some undo stress while he's recovering form this ordeal.

How Do I Make My Oscar Fish Aggressive???

i saw an oscar in a pet shop one day and when the guy at the store put the net in the water the oscar started biting the net and ramming into it, that particular oscar was full grown, my oscars are medium sized i was wondering if someone can tell me what 2 do 2 make them really mean and aggressive???
Answers:
Feed live prey food (smaller fish, pinkie for larger oscars, worms, insects) and not have any other aggressive fish in the tank that would challange it. Limit the feeding so that its hungry but don't starve it or you will stop its growth. You might not see the aggressiveness because there are also very smart fish and they know who their owners are. Once full grown and stranger that might come into its space with a finger, net, other fish the oscar will protect its space.

Note: feeding live prey like fish, worms, and some other items run you the risk of bugs that can infect your oscar.
Why on earth would you want to make your fish aggressive on purpose?
hes already aggressive i had an oscar for like 3 %261/2 years when i first got him he was kinda mellow then when he got bigger and older he got really aggressive and i had him in my 75 gallon aquarium alone and when i would add more fish he would pick on them sometimes i would feed him gold fish minows feeder fish but thats not really healthy for him so i stuck with large pellets
poke him with a stick?? assuming it would make you agressive if you were poked repeatdly maybe try it on the fish??? WHY THE F*** do you wanna do that to a fish??? i mean WTF!!!
Oscars are by nature aggressive. After he's been in the tank for a while,a week or 2,introduce a new fish. He will attack it:,take it out so as not to let it get hurt. When he's big, like 8 inches ,for example,he'll be slow but mean, especially when hungry or territory is being invaded.
are you trying to enter them in a wrestling competition? anyway why do you want to ' MAKE' them aggressive?? its in their instindt to be aggressive.
Its adviseable to keep your Oscar happy and healthy rather than thinking of making it aggressive !

If you are really seeking something which will be aggressive without any apparent reason..go for a Flowerhorn.
Keep putting your face in front of the tank. Sooner or later they'll attack you and anyone the comes into the room.

You must be very immature (like age 10 to 15) to want to make such an intelligent fish aggressive. it already is.
Are you thinking it can be trained to protect your house while you are gone?

How do i make him stop i cant sleep?

my goldfish wont stop singing
Answers:
tell him your in the mood for fish sticks
DROWN HIM..
Sell him to the circus
thanks for the 2 points!
give him a friend
get medication for you from a Psychiatrist.
flush him!
get it a friend or just buy some ear plugs
sorry i do not know what to tell you...wear earplugs
hmmm... now that's a hard one! I'm not sure
Have the little girl Darla from Finding Nemo come over she can help
feed him a little more then usual my goldfish did the same thing i usually gave it a midnight snack and also got another fish for a friend it worked out pretty well after that so maybe thats your solution
Tell him to at least sing a good song then. Something from the little mermaid maybe.
Is this the only fish you have? It needs a friend. Buy another goldfish.
Add some clove oil to the tank before you sleep. Watch he doesn't drown :) as he'll pass out.
Tell him to sing you a lullaby.

Seriously though get him a mate or some earplugs for yourself.
does he atleast take requests? you can rent him out to parties
record it and put it on youtube. Then get a playmate for it.
Soundproof his tank. But a singing goldfish is quite rare. You should try him out on American Idol.

;-)~
Why do you waste your time with these stupid questions?
Thanks for the 2 points!

How do I make coral from the ocean okay for my freshwater fish tank?

I picked up some coral and shells out of the ocean and I want to put them in my freshwater tank. What do I need to do to sanitize it? Thanks in advance!
Answers:
You should not do that at all, because it increases the calcium in your water and probably makes the pH and KH higher. Especially fish from the south american area who like water with low pH and KH this could be deadly, so please leave those corals out...it wouldn't look natural anyways..!
Shells should be fine - as the other response stated the coral may play with your PH.
no matter how much you rince the coral and shells will always contain salt water traces wich wouldn't hurt you fish it might actually help but there are many dieses that will hurt your fish but not the ocean ones, unless you want to deal with your fish dieding i wouldn't subjust it. And those other people about the ph are right to. Just troubles!
I wont do it if I were you because the shells might change te chemistry in your aquarium. I would try getting the shells in the petstore.
First off, the increased calcium is not harmful to your fish. I will caution you with regards to adding these items to your tank for the main reason it will increase your PH.

To clean them1/4 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water (no exact measure ments here) soak for a day, remove rinse and soak in dechlor water for a couple of hours (the dechlor you use in your fish tank water) rinse and put into your tank.
Keep an eye on your PH levels.

How do i lower my GH lower?

i have a GH of about 120. i have an oscar, parrot fish, silver dollar and a catfish (not sure what kind) in my tank that seem to do ok. i was going to devide 1foot of my 4 foot tank and put some neon tetras and guppys in there to brighten things up but i think the gh is to high so how could i lower this. also do you think it would be ok to devide and add other fish and how many should i add. i was gonna give my SD to a friend so this would also make more room for other fish. thanx for taking time to read and answer :)
Answers:
All of your fish will be fine in a GH of 120. Stability is the key to a good tank. Once you start "adjusting" you are fighting to keep it there all the time.

I would not divide the tank. your oscar and parrot as well as the cat need room .

Honestly I would not divide the tank. How large is your oscar? If he is small enough, larger tetras would work, however I would not be so sure about the guppies.
The neons would be fine in that GH. I would strongly recommend you not try to adjust it. I doubt the situation would work for very long though, 3 feet of space isn't enough for an oscar and parrot to be comfortable, much less the catfish too. It's a nice idea, but I would have to advise against it.

How do i know when my fish are hungry?

Answers:
You don't. You feed them on a regular schedule, such as 9 in the morning and 7 at night. If it looks like they are begging for food at the surface, don't feed them because they will get bloated.

~ZTM
you should just feed them once everyday. Fish's stomaches are only the size of their eye ball. if you give them the right amount they should not be that hungry.
Their stomachs make little noises
Feed once a day. Otherwise they will eat themselves to death.
fish are ALWAYS hungry, they never know when they should stop. you should be the one to set a schedule.
mine is twice a day at a particular time 3;00 and 9:00, a pinch, and switching off every other day to one type of foods to the other (sometimes feeding it worms, friuts, peas, etc)%26#92;

just NEVER over feed, you should feed them as much as they can finish in like 4 minutes
wenevr u think its time for them 2 eat their yur fish
Well, it sorta depends. I mean, I feed my guppies twice a day, small amounts. Smaller amounts more often are better, because there will be no food left over. Just get them on track, once in the morning and once at night, and they should never be hungry.
yeah, fishes stomaches are the size of their eyeballs, and they will eat any time.they do not know when they are full, so you need to set a stable diet for your fish.
Fish are always wanting more food.

If you feed them whenever they are hungry, you would kill them.

Feed a pinch one or two times a day.
