How do goldfish mate? Mine are acting peculiar?

my fish are swimming round 'playfighting %26 rubbing each others gills etc' are they mating?
Answers:
the male is encouraging the female to lay eggs, and then he will swim over them and fertalise them... their courtship is very sensual to watch, and yes they do touch and caress... keep watching, you may have eggs soon, but be aware that others may eat them...
Not yet... but they will be soon!
Um, I'm not sure about mating. You see gold fish are not live-bearers. Live-bearers meaning that they give birth to live young for which mating is re-quired. They are egg-layers, what happens is that your female (provided you have a male and female, an that they are a mated pair.) will lay her eggs on probably any surface of the tank that she can find, an then the male will swim over them an fertilise them by releasing his sperm into the water around them. My advice to you would be to put a few objects into the tank. some with soft surfaces and others with abrasive or porous surfaces. A good option would be an old clay pot-plant turned upside down.

Hope this helps to answer your question.

Male goldfish tend to be more slim line and when in breeding condition have very small white spots on their gill covers, females tend to be quite fat and rounded!
Males normally chase the females around with their heads up the females tail and then you'll see eggs stuck all over the tank.
They say "hiya mate"
