How do I explain...?

My friend has 8 goldfish in a 10 Gallon tank.
She and her 2 sisters all have their fish in there.
She really cares for them and love them a lot.
But I don't know how to tell her that, well, she CAN'T keep them there.
The real question is not "How do I explain" but I'm going to show this to her so explain to her why she can't.
Answers:
Those really cute little goldfish you have in your tank are babies. With proper care they will get over a foot long each! Unfortunately they won't grow that large in your 10 gallon tank. See, they will be stunted. Their bodies will try to keep growing, but they can't due to lack of space. this will cause them to get deformed and die an early and painful death. No one would want that. So you need to return the goldfish so they can have a home large enough for them and select some new fish that can be healthy and happy in your tank.

MM
for a surprise buy here a bigger tank or tell her that the saying is 1 in fish per gallon and if say wants her fish to be healthy she should get a bigger tank
just tell her that if she really cares for them she will do whats best for them which is getting a bigger tank.
Okay, I'm sorry but your friend and he sisters can keep all of their goldfish in a 10 gallon tank ... if they are 'small' and can swim around, they're fine. If your friend wants her goldfish to GROW LARGE (they'll grow to be 8-10" long) then she'll need to put them into a 'much larger' aquarium. I bought two 'feeder goldfish' in January ... they were about 1.5" long. I kept them in a 'large fishbowl' until they 'stopped growing' (at about 2") and then I got them a 20 gallon LONG tank. They've been in there since March and are now almost 6" long. When they 'stop growing' again, I'll move them to a 29 gallon tank (the same 'footprint' as the 20 gallon LONG, but 'deeper') and that will be their 'final home' since they aren't koi and can't grow any larger. I LOVE MY GOLDFISH, and I want them as BIG as they can get ...
So ... you said that your friend has 8 goldfish in that tank, but that her sisters also have their fish in there, and I'm not sure whether that is a 'grand total' of more than eight fish, or if some of the fish are not goldfish. If there are more than 8 goldfish in that bowl, then perhaps some need to be 'moved out' for better Ph in the tank ... and if there are ANY OTHER KINDS OF FISH in the tank, they need to be taken out IMMEDIATELY! Goldfish are 'very aggressive' and will EAT any other fish, especially if they are 'smaller' than they are, or if they are CROWDED ... so tell the girls that if the fish aren't all goldfish ... or if they want the goldfish to 'grow larger' ...
Say:

Goldfish are of the Carp family, it will grow just as big as Carp!

Since they are in a small tank, it's stunts their body growth.

But their organs will keep growing, it will outgrow their body, and kill the fish.

The fish are in constant pain and you are torturing them.

How's that?

Just say that the fish need space, and get her a larger tank.
If she is the type that would read and listen to it give her a goldfish handbook that says how big of a tank she needs. that way you don't actualy have to break it to her. if this dosent work you've gotta tell her for the sake of her goldfish. You might save her fish!
you have 2 choices here:

1)buy her a bigger tank to keeep the goldfish in

2)take about 6 of those goldfish %26 put them somewhere else
Gold fish are from the carp family but then so are a lot of other fish.
goldfish secrete a chemical the name of which Ive forgotten and they have an organ that then measures the density of this chemical, so if there's to many fish and not enough room the level is high and they stop growing, and Vicky vercy.
that's the simple answer.

however goldfish have been inbred crossbred interbred put between bread and so forth so much you cant rely on that function and while unlike some who think all carp can grow to the size of those in lake caserne in France (80lbs) its unlikely but they may still continue to grow.

at best 10 gallons is still too small to contain that number of fish and I'd really expect 2 at most in that size of aquarium.

dont know what its like there but at this stage in the u.k. some sneak is likely to tell the animal welfare ppl about it and they'd be banging down the door.
visit her home and look at the tank then comment that you think that they ere so crowded then tell her that you've read i the internet that the fish shouldn't be so crowed in a tank because thy will not grow healthy
A goldfish requires 10 gallons a PIECE. I think it's time the girls got their own tanks. There is so much wrong with this set up, especially if the girls care about their fish.
First off, the goldfish should get between 8 and 10 inches long. In a tank that size, they can't. The saying that fish will only grow to the size of the tank is generally true. It's a process called "stunting". Stunting causes internal organ damage. Imagine putting a 4 yr old human child in a cage and leaving it there..feeding it, cleaning it, etc. At 14, you could let the child out, but it has stunted...will have a short lifespan, medical problems, too small for its age while the inner organs matured and were scrunched (for lack of a better word!)
The other problem is ammonia which is toxic to fish. It burns their eyes, fins, scales and worst of all: gills. Goldfish have a HUGE output of ammonia. Putting that many of them into that small of a tank increased the bioload to 8x the size it SHOULD have in it. Even if the ammonia can be kept down with frequent very large water changes, nitrite will also be built up, a by product of ammonia. This is also toxic to fish and interferes with the way they absorb oxygen. So if the fish isn't burned to death in its own waste, it will slowly asphyxiate.
Goldfish have a lifespan of 20 - 30 yrs. Those that can proudly say they kept a goldfish alive for 2 yrs...well..it's like proudly announcing you kept your kitten alive for 2 months.
I'd see if they can jump on to craigslist or ebay and see if there are any cheap used tanks in their area and sell their 10 gallon set up. That way they could get their own tanks and give their goldies a chance at a great life. Sounds like you (and she) cares about the fish :)
Good luck!
