I get an old toothbrush and brush the sides of it. If it's plastic, unfortunately scrubbing it with some scratchy like the rough side of a sponge would probably scratch it. The build-up is probably something similar to hard water stains - so if you have that CLR cleaner stuff or something similar you could soak it in that.
lime away is what i used and it can be wash out to use
