hi, yes sounds like blanket weed. you'll need to pull as much out as you possible can before getting someething like Interpet Pond Balance (pink cyrstals - added evry 10days for 1st month then once a month there after), Nishikois Goodbye Blanket Weed, easy to use just chuck a satchet in! or WaterLifes Algazin P liquid that you measure out... Best to go to your local fish shop and see whta they have to offer
I'll come round and eat it for you
Hi Shirley
I've had a fish pond for years, the green stuff you refere to is called blanket-weed in its-self it's harmless in small quantities, but it does need removing, get a twiggy stick and twirl... (give us a twirl shirl), sorry I couldn't resist that and twirl it round just like the candyfloss makers do, there are several ways to stop it returning, occasionally fill up the pond and let it overflow but keep an eye on your fish, another way is to buy oxygenating plants for the pond, half to two thirds of the surface area should be covered with plant leaves (the alive type), this sort of thing happens every year, it's when the surface area is exposed to the sunlight. It's always best to buy a pamphlet or seek profesional advice from an aquatics centre, I wouldn't advise using the stuff you pour on out of a bottle, this cloggs it together and it sinks to the bottom of the pond under it's own weight where it will rot and give off gas, some might say like iv'e just done with this reply.
Hope it works Ray x
That is indeed blanket weed and it can be tough to control. The poster above gives some excellent advice and I would only add that you should remove as much as possible manually before trying other control methods. Anything that can cause a rapid die off of the weed can cause it to pollute the pond and even to the point of killing fish.

There is a fish that eats aquatic vegatation and does a great job at it. it is called a white amur or grass carp. If you have a larger pond the grasscarp is the way to go. The chemical copper sulfate works great on algae but can deplete the oxygen in you pond as will most herbacides. Here is the website for a company i used to work for. They can help you identify the weed and the best way to take care of it. http://jonesfish.com/default.asp...
