How many algae eaters should be in a 55 gallon tank?

Answers:
ONE is all you need. One plecostomus. If you have a serious algae problem, try adding another, or a couple of snails. However, be aware that goldfish and koi LOVE to eat snails...

* Do water changes more frequently.

* Limit the ammount of time your overhead tank light is on to no more than 8-9 hours a day.

* Remove the tank from direct sunlight.

* Vaccuum substrate (gravel) more frequently and scrub the inside of the tank with a sponge or green scrub pad. Make sure it will not scratch the tank. Remove any decorations and wash them in hot water before replacing them.

* If all else fails, try adding an algicide (algae killer) available at your local pet store. Be sure to CAREFULLY read and adhere to all directions given on the box!
I'd say about twelve...why are you asking this? How many will fit?

one will be good enough. It will grow and clean everything.
It depends ono how much algae your tank will have. But I would suggest 1 plecostomus, as they grow to be very large.

I have a 55 gallon tank in my house and have been dealing with all kinds of fish for over 13 years. You only need one algae eater. They grow to thier invironment. Think "an inch of fish per gallon of water". Get the tank out of direct sunlight because this causes a big problem with algae growth to get out of hand. Your algae eater will eat algae for a while but when it gets older and larger then tend to move from eating algae to eating leftover food from other fish. Do a 1/4 water change more often if the problem doesnt go away. But when I moved my tank away from direct sunlight it made the out of control algae problem stop. I wouldn't suggest useing algae destroyer at first because it will give the algae eater nothing to eat. But only have one and if you need to clean the tank more aften also (like syphoning it).
definitely not twelve. Get a pleco about 6 inches in length and about three flying foxes. Those are algae eaters
