One of my female guppies is very fat and has been for a long time now but has never given birth. I've heard about the gravid spot being an indication, but all the female guppies I have owned or seen have that spot and I have never had one give birth before. How do you determine when she is about to give birth? What do the babies look like when they are born? What color are they usually?
Answers:
guppies have babies very rapidly...it is crazy how fast they reproduce. at first there will be a dark spot (gravid) then when they have the babies it will be red (blood). you can tell when they are giving birth cause all the other fish in the tank will be following her around and look like they are snippng at her anal area. they are eating the babies. if any of the babies survive they will look like little floating eyeballs at first, but they grow very fast. now if you want them to survive then you need o get a floating plant that they can hide in at the top of teh tank, but i suggest not doing this and letting nature take its course. i had feeder guppies about 10 females and one was already prego and she gave birth to some males who then impregnated more femles resulting in more guppies...soon i had over 100 guppies in a little 10 gallon tank and i couldnt get my fish to eat them fast enough. i had to end up seperating all the males out and giving them away to the fish store and killing al the females. we wont do gupppies anymore, but if you are careful they can be quite enjoyable. there are some gorgeous males out there.
the babies look like tiny fish, they are usually almost transparent
I remeber when my guppy had babies. Usualy there but's are red and they are fatter. When they are born thay are really small and cute and have no color dpending who the daddy is also. I advise you that if your guppy is pregnet put her in another tank on her own because when she is giving bith the other fish or herself would eat the baby fish. Keep an eye on her because when she gives birth she could eat all her babies on her own. When she has the baby's put her on the other tank with the other fish and leave the baby's. they will be ok. Just feed the tinier portions of fish food.
I'll give you a quick and simple answer. The spot gets bigger and bigger, don't worry about it. Separate the guppy (they sale "maternity boxes" that you can place inside the fish tank). You will see when the babies are coming out, they look like little mosquitoes. They look like "commas". It is very important that once she is not giving birth anymore you separate her from the babies and leave the babies isolated until they grow or the adults will eat them.
